Who sets it
The Government sets the guaranteed monthly minimum wage by decree after consulting the social partners in the social concertation council.
How it changes
It is normally reviewed each year and usually takes effect on 1 January. Workers receive fourteen payments a year, counting the holiday and Christmas allowances.
Who is covered, and who is treated differently
- It applies to all employees, with the same national rate on the mainland and a separate regional rate in some autonomous regions.
- Domestic workers have their own rules.
What to watch for
- The monthly figure shown spreads the two extra payments over twelve months to compare with other countries.
Understand the legal system first
Portugal belongs to the Civil law family. How pay is regulated depends on how the legal system makes and applies labour law.
