Who sets it
A national collective labour agreement, concluded by the social partners in the National Labour Council, sets the guaranteed minimum monthly income. The State makes it binding.
How it changes
Belgium links wages to prices through automatic indexation, so the minimum rises when the index passes its trigger point, and it is also raised by agreement between the social partners.
Who is covered, and who is treated differently
- It applies to workers in the private sector.
- Sector joint committees negotiate higher floors for their own sector.
What to watch for
- The monthly figure shown is the full-time equivalent; check the sector agreement, which may be higher.
Understand the legal system first
Belgium belongs to the Civil law family. How pay is regulated depends on how the legal system makes and applies labour law.
