Minimum wage in Ethiopia

No minimum wage set by law or by general agreement

Ethiopia has no statutory minimum wage for private-sector workers. The labour law provides for a wage board to set one, but no private-sector floor has been set.

There is no single statutory figure to show for Ethiopia.

Check the date. Minimum wages change, in many countries every year. The figure above is the one in force at the date shown. Confirm the current amount with the official source below before you rely on it. This is general information, not legal or employment advice.

Who sets it

Pay is agreed between employer and worker, or by collective agreement. The Labour Proclamation of 2019 provides for a Wage Board of government, employer and union representatives to set minimum wages, but it has not set a national minimum for the private sector.

How it changes

Nothing changes by a fixed schedule. If the Wage Board sets a minimum, it would be revised from time to time.

Who is covered, and who is treated differently

  • The public sector has its own pay scales, set separately.
  • Some employers, such as large foreign-owned factories, publish their own entry wages.

What to watch for

  • There is no single figure to quote. Pay is set by contract, and the law's wage board has not yet acted.

Understand the legal system first

Ethiopia belongs to the Civil law family. How pay is regulated depends on how the legal system makes and applies labour law.
