Full recognition and a cédula profesional
For: Foreign-qualified lawyers who want to practise Mexican law.
- Have your foreign law degree recognised by the Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP). Only a total equivalence is enough to practise; a partial one lets you continue studying in Mexico.
- Apply to the SEP's professions office for the cédula profesional, the professional licence that allows you to practise.
- Check whether a treaty applies to your country, or whether reciprocity and your immigration status let the licence be granted.
Mexico is a federal state, and some rules are set at the state level. Confirm the conditions with the SEP or with a Mexican lawyer.
