Practising law in Argentina as a foreign lawyer

A foreign law degree must be validated through an Argentine national university (a process called reválida) before the holder can register as a lawyer. Registration then happens with the bar association of the city or province.

Rules change. This page describes the kinds of route that exist. The regulator listed under “Official sources” publishes the current requirements, fees and dates, so always confirm with them. This is general information, not legal advice.

The routes

Validate the degree, then register

For: Foreign-qualified lawyers who want to practise Argentine law.

  1. Obtain an apostille on your law degree and full transcripts.
  2. Apply to a national university's law faculty for validation. Faculties decide case by case, and usually require exams on Argentine law subjects.
  3. Register with the bar association where you will practise. In Buenos Aires city that is the Colegio Público de Abogados de la Capital Federal. Provinces add their own conditions.

Universities decide each application separately, and some refuse validation. Check with the faculty of law and the bar association first.

Practising only your home-country law

We could not confirm a clear public rule on practising only home-country law in Argentina. Ask the bar association.

Understand the legal system first

Argentina belongs to the Civil law family. Knowing how its system works makes the admission route easier to follow.
