This course explains the law of Spain, not US law. Rules that look the same elsewhere may be different.

Spanish Law
The law of Spain for the people who deal with it: the civil-law tradition and EU law, the Constitution of 1978, the State of Autonomies and regional civil law, the courts and the Constitutional Court, rights and administrative law, the Civil Code, business, tax and employment, and immigration, criminal law and cross-border disputes.

Spain is a civil-law country with a long and layered legal history and one of Europe’s most distinctive territorial arrangements. Its Constitution of 1978 created a parliamentary monarchy and a State of Autonomies in which seventeen Autonomous Communities have their own parliaments and governments, several of them with their own civil law, and the Basque Country and Navarre with their own tax systems. This course gives a complete first map for the people who deal with Spanish law, from the point of view of the foreigner. It starts with the history, the sources and the hierarchy of norms; then the Constitution and the national institutions; then the territorial organisation and regional civil law, which deserves much more than a passing mention; then the courts, the Constitutional Court and the legal professions; then rights and administrative law; then the Civil Code, contracts, property, family and inheritance; then business, tax and employment; and finally immigration, everyday legal life, criminal procedure and cross-border disputes. It uses invented people and businesses, and three working tools.

What It Covers
“You will be able to say, for any problem you may have in Spain, which rule applies (including which region’s civil law), which court or authority decides it, which time limit runs and which professional you need.”
- Written for the foreigner and honest about Spain’s regional variety: it explains foral and regional civil law, civil neighbourhood and foral taxation instead of treating Spain as uniform, and follows the questions a visitor, resident, employee, family or business actually has.
- Teaches the structure behind the rules, so that a student who knows how the Constitution, EU law, the codes, the regions and the courts fit together can read any new rule, and compare Spanish law with other civil-law systems.
- Three tools with invented facts: a Residence Status Finder, an Entity Chooser and a Court and Forum Finder, each showing how the answer changes when a fact does.
- Honest about limits: it teaches durable provisions, flags where rules change quickly (the immigration regulation, the 2025 dispute resolution reform, tax regimes) and does not state changing figures. It is general education, not advice.

Common questions
- Is Spain a federal country?
- Not formally, but its State of Autonomies gives the Autonomous Communities substantial legislative and administrative powers, and the course explains the system carefully instead of calling Spain simply centralised.
- Does the law differ between regions?
- Yes, in several important areas. Some regions have their own civil law (for example on matrimonial property and inheritance), taxes differ by region, and the Basque Country and Navarre have their own tax systems. Module 3 and the later modules explain where it matters.
- Is it for people who want to practise Spanish law?
- No. It is a first course for the people who deal with Spanish law. Only a Spanish abogado can advise on Spanish law and act in court, and the course says when you need one.
- Are the tools real data?
- No. The tools apply well-known rules in simplified form to invented facts. They show the structure of the answer and cannot decide a case.
- Does it give the current rule on every point?
- It teaches the provisions that have lasted. Reforms, quotas, tax regimes and time limits change, so check the current text for any real matter.
- How do I get the Certificate of Completion?
- Sign in, pass each module quiz and keep a course average of at least 75. The certificate is then issued and emailed to you automatically.
