Module 6

The Civil Code: contracts, remedies, civil liability, property, family and inheritance, with the differences of regional civil law

The **Civil Code of 1889** has **four books**: **persons**, **property and ownership and its modifications**, **the different ways of acquiring ownership** (including succession and contracts) and **obligations and contracts**. It is the **common civil law** of Spain, and **applies as supplementary law** in the regions that have their **own civil law** (Module 3). A foreigner meets the Code when he **signs a contract, rents or buys a home, marries, has children or inherits**. This module explains the main rules and the points where **regional law** or a **foreigner’s position** makes a difference. Recent reforms and **EU regulations** change details, so check the current text.
