Italy is the home of the civil-law tradition. Roman law was rediscovered and taught at Bologna in the Middle Ages, spread across Europe as the ius commune, and returned to Italy through the Napoleonic codes. Today Italian law rests on the Civil Code of 1942, on the Constitution of 1948 and on European Union law, which prevails over national statutes, and it is applied by a professional judiciary, a Constitutional Court, administrative and tax courts, and by lawyers and notaries with distinctive roles. This course gives a complete first map for the people who deal with it, from the point of view of the foreigner. It starts with the history, the sources and the hierarchy of norms; then the Constitution and the institutions of the state; then the Regions, the courts and the legal professions; then rights, citizenship and administrative law; then the Civil Code, contracts, property, family and succession; then business, employment, tax and social security; then criminal law and procedure; and finally the specialised rules on consumers, intellectual property, immigration, real estate, mediation and cross-border relations. It uses invented people and businesses, and three working tools.

What It Covers
“You will be able to say, for any problem you may have in Italy, which rule applies, which court or authority decides it, which time limit runs and which professional you need.”
- Written for the foreigner: it follows the questions a visitor, resident, employee, family or business actually has (the permit of stay, the company, the preliminary contract, the dismissal, the will) and says plainly which professional may do what, including the notary.
- Teaches the structure behind the rules, so that a student who knows how the Constitution, EU law, the codes and the courts fit together can read any new rule, and compare Italian law with other civil-law systems.
- Three tools with invented facts: a Residence Status Finder, an Entity Chooser and a Court and Forum Finder, each showing how the answer changes when a fact does.
- Honest about limits: it teaches durable provisions, flags where rules change quickly (quotas, tax regimes, recent reforms of the family procedure and of citizenship by descent) and does not state changing figures. It is general education, not advice.

Common questions
- Is it for people who want to practise Italian law?
- No. It is a first course for the people who deal with Italian law: visitors, residents, students, employees, families, investors and their advisers. Only an Italian avvocato can advise on Italian law and act in court, and the course says when you need one.
- Does it cover buying a house in Italy?
- Yes, in Modules 5 and 8: the preliminary contract and the deposit, the checks before buying, the role of the notary, the registers, taxes in outline and leases. Fees, taxes rates and incentives change, so check the current rule.
- Does it cover EU law?
- Yes. It explains the primacy of EU law, free movement and the EU regulations on jurisdiction, applicable law, succession and family matters that apply in Italy.
- Are the tools real data?
- No. The tools apply well-known rules in simplified form to invented facts. They show the structure of the answer and cannot decide a case.
- Does it give the current rule on every point?
- It teaches the provisions that have lasted. Reforms, quotas, tax regimes and time limits change, so check the current text for any real matter.
- How do I get the Certificate of Completion?
- Sign in, pass each module quiz and keep a course average of at least 75. The certificate is then issued and emailed to you automatically.
