England and Wales is the oldest common law jurisdiction and the starting point for many others. Its law was built by judges deciding cases, and its habits of mind, such as binding precedent, the separate rules of equity and the split between civil and criminal courts, have spread to a large part of the world. This course gives a complete first map. It starts with the system itself: what the jurisdiction is, where the law comes from, how precedent binds courts and how judges read statutes. It then covers the uncodified constitution, parliamentary sovereignty, the Human Rights Act and judicial review; the core private law of contract and tort; criminal law and the procedure from arrest to appeal; and a first look at land, the family home, trusts, wills and family law. It uses statutes and landmark cases that have lasted, invented people and businesses, and three working tools.

What It Covers

“You will be able to say, for any problem under the law of England and Wales, which area of law governs it, which court decides, which time limit applies and what the likely remedy is.”
  • Follows the problem: a four-question order of thought (which area of law, what are the elements, which court and which time limit, and what remedy) that works on every problem in the course and the capstone.
  • Teaches the structure behind the rules, so that a student who knows how precedent, equity and the statutes fit together can read any new case or Act.
  • Three tools with invented facts: a Precedent Checker, a Court Finder and a Police Powers Checker, each showing how the answer changes when a fact does.
  • Honest about limits: it teaches durable statutes and landmark cases, and does not state changing figures, fees or recent decisions. It is general education, not advice, and it links to the site’s England and Wales portal and to SQE Prep.

Common questions

Does it cover Scotland and Northern Ireland?
No. The United Kingdom has three legal systems, and this course covers England and Wales only. It explains the difference and how devolution works.
Is this the same as SQE Prep?
No. This course is a first map of the whole system and its main subjects, with invented cases and working tools. SQE Prep is exam practice for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination.
Does it give the current law on every point?
It teaches the statutes and landmark cases that have lasted. Detailed rules, fees, thresholds and recent decisions change, so check current law for any real matter.
Are the tools real data?
No. The tools apply well-known rules in simplified form to invented facts. They show the structure of the answer and cannot decide a case.
Is it useful for practice or for exams?
Yes. It covers the core subjects of English legal study at a first-map level, and it is useful for anyone who needs to understand how the courts of England and Wales work.
How do I get the Certificate of Completion?
Sign in, pass each module quiz and keep a course average of at least 75. The certificate is then issued and emailed to you automatically.
