Module 4
Tort law: negligence, occupiers, nuisance, defamation, vicarious liability and damages
A tort is a civil wrong, other than a breach of contract, for which the law gives damages or another remedy. Unlike contract, where the duties come from a bargain, the duties in tort are imposed by law. The central tort is negligence, and in modern practice it accounts for most claims: road accidents, accidents at work, medical injury and professional errors. Other torts protect land (trespass, nuisance), reputation (defamation) and people from deliberate harm. This module follows negligence step by step, then covers the main other torts, the defences and the way damages are worked out.
