QLA Prep
The Law Society of Scotland's Qualified Lawyers Assessment — the requalification route for lawyers already qualified elsewhere seeking to practise as a Scottish solicitor.
Who Is This For?
The QLA is Scotland's requalification route for solicitors, barristers, and overseas-qualified lawyers already admitted in another jurisdiction. It is not the route Scotland's own law graduates take (LLB, then the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice, then a traineeship — no discrete exam).
The Qualified Lawyers Assessment (QLA) is the Law Society of Scotland's requalification route - for solicitors, barristers, and overseas-qualified lawyers already admitted elsewhere who want to qualify as a Scottish solicitor, not a first-time law degree route. Scotland is a genuinely mixed legal system: its private law (Obligations, Conveyancing, Trusts and Succession) is substantially civilian/Roman-law-influenced, while its criminal and public law lean common-law in style - a real, structural departure from every other jurisdiction in this exam-prep line. Each of the 11 mandatory subjects is its own separate, open-book paper, built from essay and problem questions, sat twice yearly in May and November, with no official teaching materials provided by the Law Society.
The Curriculum
Practice by Subject→
Single-best-answer questions across each QLA subject, with a full explanation after every question - self-test practice for the black-letter law the exam still requires you to know.
Timed Essay Outline Sprints→
The format that actually matches the real exam: a concrete fact pattern, a countdown, and a model IRAC outline to self-audit against once time's up.
What It Covers
“This tool teaches general QLA-style patterns through original practice material grounded in real Scots law - not affiliated with or endorsed by the Law Society of Scotland, and not a substitute for the official syllabus.”
- Built around Scotland's real, distinctive doctrine - no consideration requirement, the enforceable unilateral promise, specific implement as the primary remedy - not a generic common-law approximation borrowed from England.
- Grounded in the current Contract (Formation and Remedies) (Scotland) Act 2026 alongside established case law, not outdated pre-codification assumptions.
- Each of the 11 subjects stands alone, matching how the QLA actually examines them - practice exactly the subjects you still need.
