Egypt

One of the oldest legal civilisations in the world and a modern civil-law system with a Civil Code that became a model for the Arab world, a separate administrative judiciary in the French tradition, a Supreme Constitutional Court, and personal status rules that depend on religion. How the system works, how to live, work and buy there, and why an unregistered contract is a trap. Free articles, organized by subject, growing every week.

Who This Page Is For

This portal collects material on Egyptian law, a civil-law system with a distinctive constitutional and religious framework: the Civil Code of 1948 is its backbone, Islamic Sharia is under Article 2 the principal source of legislation, personal status rules depend on religion, and the courts are organised in separate branches: the ordinary courts, the State Council and the Supreme Constitutional Court. Egypt is not governed by a single religious code. It is written for readers who visit, live, work, study, buy property or do business in Egypt or who want to understand its legal system, and it explains laws, institutions and procedures without giving legal advice or opinions on individual cases. Laws change, and some of the most important ones were replaced in 2025. Everywhere else on this site, content reflects US law unless a page says otherwise.
