The UAE has **two kinds of courts side by side**. A **federal judiciary** serves some emirates, while **Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah** run their **own local judicial systems**. Three levels, **first instance, appeal and cassation**, are the same in each. In addition, the **DIFC** and **ADGM** have **independent common-law courts** in **English**. Who may **represent** a party is also unusual: only **UAE nationals** may appear as **advocates** in the onshore courts, while **foreign lawyers** work as **legal consultants** or appear in the **DIFC and ADGM courts**. This module draws the map so that a foreigner knows **which court** a dispute will go to and **which professional** may act.
This course explains the law of the United Arab Emirates, not US law. Rules that look the same elsewhere may be different. This covers the federal law of the UAE, with notes on the emirates and the free zones that have their own rules.
