Lawyers are short of time, and most do not know where it goes. This course starts with an honest picture of a legal working day, then gives you the tools one at a time: how to sort work by importance and urgency, how to treat hard deadlines as fixed points, how to estimate honestly and plan backwards, how to protect deep work in a reactive job, how to delegate and receive work well, how to build simple systems that keep dates safe, and how to hold a pace you can sustain. Each module has practice labs with invented people and situations.
The Curriculum
Where the time goes: the lawyer's working day and why it slips→
How legal time is spent, why it slips, and a simple audit that shows where the hours go. Practice: Where Did the Hour Go and Reading the Audit.
Priorities: importance, urgency and the work that is easy to lose→
Importance against urgency, fixed deadlines, and the four decisions: do, schedule, delegate, drop. Practice: Do, Schedule, Delegate or Drop and Whose Priority.
Planning and estimating: from deadlines backwards, with buffers→
Ranges and buffers, planning backwards from a deadline, breaking work into steps and a week that holds. Practice: Plan Backwards and Estimating.
Focus and interruptions: protecting attention in a reactive job→
Deep-work blocks, email and message windows, the quick question, meetings and switching costs. Practice: Fragmented Day and Interruption Replies.
Delegation and supervision: handing work on and receiving it well→
What to delegate, the brief, follow-up, receiving work and saying no. Practice: Delegation Brief and Receiving Work.
Systems: capturing tasks, protecting deadlines and keeping order→
One place for tasks, a safe diary for deadlines, checklists and templates, and tools used carefully. Practice: What Goes Where and Deadline Safety.
A sustainable pace: reviews, procrastination, energy and a time-habits profile→
The weekly review, procrastination and backlog, energy, ending the day and saying no. Practice: Time Habits Profile and Weekly Review.
Capstone: Capstone: the overloaded Monday, and your own system→
Six decisions on an overloaded Monday, and a one-page system of your own.
What It Covers
“You will not be taught to cram in more. You will be taught to decide, plan and protect the hours that matter.”
- Seven modules and a capstone Monday that follow a lawyer's week from the first audit to a one-page system of your own.
- Legal examples throughout: limitation dates, filings, partners with conflicting requests, clients who call at the wrong moment, and the two-person check on a high-stakes deadline.
- Practice labs rather than slogans: a time audit reader, a sort of do, schedule, delegate or drop, a plan built backwards from a filing, a delegation brief, a deadline safety check and a time-habits profile.
- Honest about limits: it separates what you can change from what you must plan around, and it links time to wellbeing.

Common questions
- Is this just a general productivity course?
- No. The examples, labs and rules of thumb are built around legal work: hard deadlines, billable culture, reactive requests, supervision and professional duties.
- Does it replace the firm's deadline system?
- No. It teaches principles and habits for personal systems, and it tells you to take deadlines from the rule or order that sets them, to record them in more than one place and to have important dates checked by a second person.
- Does it recommend particular software?
- No. A simple system that you use every day beats a clever one you abandon. The course covers how to use tools, including AI, with confidentiality and accuracy in mind.
- How does it relate to Steady Under Load?
- The two fit together: this course is about how you plan and protect your time, and Steady Under Load is about stress, burnout and recovery. Each refers to the other where it matters.
- How do I get the Certificate of Completion?
- Sign in, pass each module quiz and keep a course average of at least 75. The certificate is then issued and emailed to you automatically.
- Is any of it legal advice?
- No. The people and situations are invented for teaching, and this is general education, not legal advice. Professional rules about deadlines and supervision differ by place.
