This course explains the law of Saudi Arabia, not US law. Rules that look the same elsewhere may be different.

Saudi Arabian Law
The law of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the people who deal with it: an Islamic legal order in which the Basic Law names the Quran and the Sunnah as the constitution and modern statutes now cover most of private, commercial and procedural law, from the King and the Council of Ministers to the courts and the Board of Grievances, and from visas, Premium Residency and employment to the 2026 framework for foreign property ownership, companies and investment, personal status and inheritance, and criminal justice.

Saudi Arabia is the largest economy of the Middle East and one of the most interesting and fastest-changing legal systems in the world. It is an Islamic monarchy in which the Basic Law of Governance names the Quran and the Sunnah as the constitution, but it is also a country that in a few years has codified personal status, civil transactions and evidence, issued a new companies law, opened the door to Premium Residency and, in 2026, introduced a new framework for foreign ownership of real estate. This course gives a complete first map for the people who deal with Saudi law: investors, executives, professionals, families, property buyers and Saudi readers who want to understand their own system. It starts with the Islamic foundations, the Basic Law and the sources of law; then the King, the Council of Ministers and the Shura Council; then the regions, nationality and society; then the courts, the Board of Grievances and the legal professions; then rights, administration and accountability; then a full practical module on living, working, investing and owning property; then civil law, family and inheritance; and finally business, criminal justice and the specialised fields. It ends with a capstone, in which you advise an invented Swiss founder in Riyadh, using four working tools. It is a first course for the people who deal with Saudi law, not a course to practise it.

What It Covers
“You will be able to say, for any problem you may have in the Kingdom, which rule applies (including which law, regulation or Sharia principle governs it and which authority issues or enforces it), which court or body decides it, which time limit runs and which professional you need.”
- Written for the foreigner and honest about the system: it explains how Sharia and legislation work together under the Basic Law instead of treating Saudi Arabia as a civil-law or common-law country, and it follows the questions a visitor, resident, employee, investor, family or property buyer actually has.
- A full practical module on the legal journey of a foreign national: visas and the iqama, the labour reforms and Premium Residency, employment and Saudisation, and the 2026 framework for foreign ownership of real estate, with the point that it is not an unrestricted right to buy anywhere and that different kinds of buyer must not be confused.
- Four tools with invented facts: a Residence Status Finder, an Entity Chooser, a Property Purchase Checker that shows the checks before paying for property, and a Court and Forum Finder, each showing how the answer changes when a fact does.
- Honest about limits: many Saudi laws are new, regulations and zones change, and fees, rates, quotas and ratios move often, so the course teaches the structure and points to the official source for the current text. It states no changing figures, describes sensitive subjects as law and not as a view of their merits, and is general education, not advice.

Common questions
- Is Saudi law just Islamic law?
- Sharia is the foundation and the Basic Law says so, but most of commercial, labour, company, property and procedural law is now written in statutes issued by royal decree, which must not conflict with Sharia. The course explains how the two work together.
- Can a foreigner buy property in Saudi Arabia?
- Under the 2026 framework, foreign individuals and entities may acquire real estate rights in designated areas and under conditions, with Makkah and Madinah treated separately. It is not an unrestricted right, and the answer depends on the category of buyer and the place. The course explains the structure and tells you to check the Real Estate General Authority for the current rules.
- Is it for people who want to practise Saudi law?
- No. It is a first course for the people who deal with Saudi law. Only a lawyer licensed in the Kingdom may appear in the Saudi courts, and the course says when you need one.
- Are the tools real data?
- No. The tools apply well-known rules in simplified form to invented facts. They show the structure of the answer and cannot decide a case.
- Does it give the current rule on every point?
- It teaches the provisions that have lasted. Regulations, visa rules, fees, quotas, tax rates and the property zones change often, and the new codes are still being applied, so check the current text for any real matter.
- How do I get the Certificate of Completion?
- Sign in, pass each module quiz and keep a course average of at least 75. The certificate is then issued and emailed to you automatically.
This course was written on 6 November 2026. To the best of our knowledge, it describes the law of Saudi Arabia as it stood on that date. Laws change, and we may have missed or misunderstood something. If you notice a change, or have other information, please do not hesitate to contact us: we will review it and update the course. We do not claim to be the final source of the law.
