The Law To Know

Module 2

Structure and layout: the parts of a document, ordering the clauses, headings, numbering and cross-references, schedules and one place for each rule

A reader meets the structure of a document before the sentences. Good structure lets the everyday reader find the payment terms in ten seconds, lets the dispute reader see that nothing has been left out and lets the later reader understand how the parts fit together. Bad structure hides a clause that matters, repeats a rule in two places with slightly different words and sets a cross-reference that points nowhere after the third round of edits. This module covers the parts of a document, the order of clauses, headings and numbering, cross-references, schedules and the habit of putting each rule in one place.
