The Law To Know

Module 3

From claim to appeal: the road a civil dispute travels, from the first letter to the judgment, enforcement and appeal, and what is expected of someone who represents themselves

A legal dispute is not one event. It is a road with stages, and each stage has its own rules, its own deadline and its own cost. Most disputes end early: with a letter, a payment or a settlement. Those that do not move through a sequence that is similar in every state, even though the forms and names differ. Knowing the road changes how a problem feels. You can see where you are, what comes next and which stages you can handle yourself. This module follows a civil dispute from the first letter to the appeal, and then explains what a court expects from a person who has no lawyer. It is general education for the United States and not legal advice.
