Pakistan
A federal parliamentary republic with a written Constitution, a common-law inheritance from British India, an Islamic constitutional layer with a Federal Shariat Court and a Council of Islamic Ideology, provinces that make most of the rules on land and labour since 2010, personal laws that differ by community, and a land system in which a registered deed, not a revenue entry, carries title. How the system works, how to live, work and buy there, and what the courts decide. Free articles, organized by subject, growing every week.

Who This Page Is For
This portal collects material on Pakistani law, a common-law system with a written federal Constitution (1973) and an Islamic constitutional layer: the colonial codes (the Penal Code, the Contract Act, the Code of Civil Procedure) are still in force in amended form, fundamental rights are enforced by the superior courts, provincial law governs land, labour and much else, and personal laws differ by religion and community. It is written for readers who visit, live, work, study, buy property or do business in Pakistan, for Pakistanis who want to understand their own legal system, and for anyone comparing legal systems, and it explains laws, institutions and procedures without giving legal advice or opinions on individual cases. Laws change, and the highest courts were reshaped by constitutional amendments in 2024 and 2025. Everywhere else on this site, content reflects US law unless a page says otherwise.
