Greece

One of the oldest legal cultures in the world and a modern civil-law member of the European Union, with one Civil Code, a Constitution of 1975, three separate court systems under Areios Pagos, the Council of State and the Court of Audit, and a practical side that millions of people meet: how to buy a house or flat safely with a notary and the registry, how residence and visas really work, and why tax residence is a separate question. Who This Page Is For

This portal collects material on Greek law, a civil-law system with one Civil Code (1946), the Constitution of 1975 and three separate court systems: the ordinary courts under Areios Pagos, the administrative courts under the Council of State and the Court of Audit. It has two dimensions: the Greek state and legal system, and practical law for people who buy property, move, retire, work remotely or set up a business in Greece, where buying a house, the right to reside, tax residence and citizenship are four different questions. It is written for readers who visit, live, work, study, buy property or do business in Greece, for Greeks and Bulgarians and others who want to understand the system, and it explains laws, institutions and procedures without giving legal advice or opinions on individual cases. Immigration, investment and tax rules change often. Everywhere else on this site, content reflects US law unless a page says otherwise.
