How to use it

  • When: you are an employee and have decided to end your employment, and you want to do it properly and keep a record.
  • Before you send: find the notice period in your contract and the law and count it from the right day. Think carefully; in some places a resignation, once accepted, cannot easily be withdrawn.
  • Fill in everything in [square brackets] and delete the options you do not use. You do not usually have to explain why you are leaving; a short, polite letter is best.
  • Hand it in or send it by a method you can prove: deliver by hand and ask for a signed receipt, or send by registered post or e-mail with read receipt, as your contract requires. Keep a copy.
  • Not for: ending a contract as a freelancer or contractor (use a notice under that agreement), or leaving because the employer has seriously broken the contract (take advice first, as special rules may apply).
