How to use it
- When: a person or company (the Guarantor) promises a lender or creditor (the Creditor) that they will pay a debt of another (the Debtor) if the Debtor does not.
- Fill in everything in [square brackets] and delete the options you do not use. Describe the debt exactly (agreement, amount, date) and limit the amount and the time.
- Guarantors: do not sign what you do not understand. Ask for a maximum amount and an end date, and for the right to be told if the Debtor falls behind.
- Form: write it down and have all parties sign, one copy for each. Some countries require a notary or the guarantor's own handwriting for the amount.
- Not for: security over property (a mortgage or pledge), a guarantee given by a bank, or a promise to pay one's own debt.
