Module 8
Business, employment and tax: companies and the commercial registry, employment and social insurance, income tax and tax residence, and the special regimes for new residents
Business in Greece is governed by commercial and company law. The usual forms are the private capital company (IKE), the société anonyme (AE), the limited liability company (EPE) and partnerships, registered in the General Commercial Registry (GEMI), with one-stop services and a register of beneficial owners. Foreign investment is welcome, with licences in regulated sectors. Employment is protected by labour law: written contracts, working-time rules, paid leave and rules on dismissal, recorded in digital systems, with social insurance through e-EFKA. Taxes are administered by the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE). Tax residence (for example the 183-day and centre of vital interests tests) is separate from immigration residence and property ownership, and special regimes exist for some new residents. Rates and rules change often, so we state no figures and you must check current law.
This course explains the law of Greece, not US law. Rules that look the same elsewhere may be different.

See what is included in the Courses & AI Lab Pass →General education on the law of Greece, using invented people and businesses. It states laws and procedures in simplified form and is not legal advice. The law and its practice change, and every case turns on its facts and the authority concerned. It does not offer legal representation or a legal opinion on any case. Consult a Greek lawyer for any real matter.
This course was written on 6 November 2026. To the best of our knowledge, it describes the law of Greece as it stood on that date. Laws change, and we may have missed or misunderstood something. If you notice a change, or have other information, please do not hesitate to contact us: we will review it and update the course. We do not claim to be the final source of the law.
