IRAC and Law Exam Writing: A Living Map

A law exam is a writing task marked by a person with a scheme. The marker rewards visible issues, accurate rules, application of the rule to the facts with reasons, and a conclusion. Issues are found by reading the facts for triggers and ranked by marks and strength; IRAC and its variants give the reasoning a shape; time follows marks; essay questions need a thesis and an argument; and practice means timed writing, marking and repeating. Press Play to watch the map build, click an idea for its definition and the usual trap, or trace a short case. A simplified teaching map.
